Color Theory

EVERY COLOR MATTERS

Here’s how we curate unique flower planters for your porch

Every type of flower has a personality. Some are sophisticated, others are whimsical, cheery or even moody in look and feel.  But the first thing you’ll notice is color.  So how do we choose which flowers to put together as we make each bespoke drop-in planter?

We start with color theory.
That’s the combination of art and science used to understand how colors interact, combine, and affect human emotions. It provides a logical structure (picture a color wheel) to create harmonious color combinations.

Some flowers do well with complementary colored companions – others don’t.
Colors opposite on the color wheel, like blue and orange,  create high contrast.  Some flowers need the contrast to show off at their best, and this mix is generally a showstopper.  Analogous colors, adjacent to each other on the color wheel,  create a harmonious feel. Think yellow with orange, or pink with purple. This mix often creates a more sedate, curated looking arrangement.

We consider color properties, too.
This includes hue, value, temperature and saturation of each flower’s colors.

There’s more to a flower than just color.
Leaf texture, flower size, and growth needs play a role. The flowers have to play nice with each other.  A planter full of similar petal shapes doesn’t have as much interest as a mix of leaf textures and petal shapes.

Culture needs are a big consideration.
All plants have different sun and water needs; you don’t want to mix a big drinker with a plant that likes to keep it’s feet dry. And of course, we are meticulous about choosing perfectly healthy, robust plants.

With every delivery, we’ll make sure you’re getting a curated, bespoke floral composition that will compliment your home, and give you joy every time you see it.

If you’ve never tried a fall refresher planter or a winter planter, we invite you to enjoy the beauty of the seasons with us.
